Culture and technology are splintering in every direction these days, but nothing brings us all back together like our collective memory of VHS tapes.
“We want our videos to be the perfect crap storm of comedy, beauty and non-preachy social commentary,” says Commodore Gilgamesh of Everything Is Terrible!, the found-footage comedy show that winds its magnetic strip into the Sie Film Center tonight. “The video portion of the show is seventy minutes of brain-bubbling psychedelic comedy, using thousands of videos mashed together. The live show is meant to enhance the audience’s love/hate of the videos that we show. Our hope is that the footage, costumed characters and the audience all interact in a moment that is truly unique.... We certainly do not long for the VHS days to return, but we do view the past as an effective tool to change the now. This footage triggers emotions in the viewers that we can manipulate in ways that cannot happen when using contemporary sources.”
Comic Relief Zero: Everything Is Terrible! Standup Special! begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Sie Film Center, 2510 East Colfax Avenue. Tickets are $12, $10 for members. For more information, visit denverfilm.org.
