You don’t have to travel as far as Ouray or Crested Butte to enjoy Colorado’s spectacular wildflowers. In fact, you don’t have to go any further than Lookout Mountain Nature Center, 910 Colorow Road in Golden, where Jefferson County Open Space is hosting its annual Wildflower Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today. “Things are really starting to bloom right now,” promises administrative specialist Amanda Peterson, who took a walk around the grounds last week and reports spotting Shooting Stars, Coral Roots and Golden Banners. You’ll be able to see these, as well as many more varieties, on one of two guided hikes (at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.) that are part of the free festival, hear about more flowers during the “Gardening With Native Plants” lecture by Megan Bowes at 1 p.m., and even take some home, since twenty different native plants will be available for sale.

While you’re busy planning additions to your garden, kids will stay busy at activity stations and watching a puppet show. For a complete schedule, call 720-497-7600.
Sun., June 13, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., 2010
