For more than twenty years, Ween made some of the most absurd, original and delightful music of all time. It may take years for the band’s influence to be integrated into the rock canon, but the long arm of Ween, which formed in Pennsylvania in 1984 has hit the fine-art world full force with Irreverent Eclectic, a multimedia art show inspired by the group. “I’m a huge Ween fan, and I got my feet wet, as far as my art collection goes, in concert posters,” says Leah Brenner, who is curating the show at Madelife in Boulder. “I was really bummed they broke up, and really just wanted to do something in tribute to them, to connect music fans to the art world.”
That something takes the form of a group show featuring sixteen artists from around the country, offering their takes on the one-and-only Ween in every medium from concert photography to sculpture. “They’re all kind of different in the direction they took,” Brenner says. “It’s not all going to be very literal pieces that you can look at and go, ‘Oh, yeah, that’s Ween.’ Some of them will be, and some will be more subtle.”
See the art inspired by Ween tonight at 7 p.m. at Madelife, 2000 21st Street in Boulder. Admission is free, and Harmonious Junk will be playing live Ween covers in the background. For more information, visit facebook.com/madelifecreative.
