Denver performance/movement company Control Group Productions continues its efforts to bring an international slate of touring avant-garde performance groups to town this weekend with the arrival of Lebanon-based Danish choreographer Jens Bjerregaard of Mancopy Danse Kompagni for a week-long residency at work|space. That residency includes a professional dance workshop and school outreach visits, but beginning tonight at 8 p.m., local audiences can also catch Bjerregaard in three performances of an evening-length collaborative solo work, Simple Moves, a three-part piece that's both autobiographical and transcendental, inspired by the basic question “How do we get to where we are?”
"This work was made by Jens after relocating to Lebanon -- it's about the transition that brought him there, and he's looking a local histories," says Patrick Mueller of Control Group, who hopes that this kind of international exchange will help cement Denver's standing as a major cultural center in the West, especially in terms of dance performance. "He works from a strong contemporary technical base. Though movement is the foremost element, his style is very refined, particular and detailed."
See the regional premiere at the same time nightly, through Saturday, at work|space, 2701 Lawrence Street in the Laundry on Lawrence; Bjerregaard will chat with the audience after each show, sharing his thoughts on the collaborative process and his cultural experiences in the Middle East.
Tickets are available in advance at mancopy.bpt.me for $14; the price rises to $17 at the door. For more information, visit controlgroupproductions.org or call 303-947-2827.
