By then, some Golden Circle members had spun off to establish another veteran swappage group: The Retreat. Located since 1978 in a converted house in unincorporated Jefferson County, the Retreat is Colorado's oldest on-premise swingers club. The secret to its longevity: "Have plenty of parking," says one of the club's managers. "People do not park where they can block other businesses." In addition to parking, the club has three bedrooms, a bar, a dance floor and a hot tub in back. The Retreat is open only on Fridays and Saturdays -- but the parties for its 1,500 members go until 4 a.m.
In 1992, still more Golden Circle veterans founded Rocky Mountain Connections Social Club. Lady Suzanne and her husband took over the group six years ago and regularly host parties at a local hotel; before each event, staffers offer a seminar on swinging etiquette. RMCSC has about 350 couples in its membership and also allows singles -- but only after the male applicants fill out an online questionnaire, go through a two-hour orientation and have a face-to-face interview during which they explain what they think they can add to the club. "And you'll get a lot from a guy saying, ŒWell, I have a nine-inch dick,'" says Lady Suzanne. "If you think that's all you're about, then you're probably not going to fit in. You are not going to get involved. Women are going to tell you no. If you're looking to get laid, go to a bar -- because it does take time. And if you're looking for a wife, go to a church, because these women are dedicated to their partners."
A couple who dubbed themselves "the Beaches" started Rocky Mountain Parties in late 2004 at a hotel in Loveland. When their parties started attracting upwards of 450 people, they relocated to a hotel in central Denver. "A lot of the local clubs were too expensive for some of the people we hang around with," explains Mr. Beach, so their parties cost only $15 a couple, $8 a single, with no membership required. "We have firemen, police officers, airplane pilots -- any type of person you could imagine," he says.
The most high-octane group in Colorado is Nova NiLLa, the only active swinger club in the country made up of motorcycle enthusiasts. According to Dave, the founder, fifty or sixty couples will meet every five weeks for motorcycle runs -- including the annual "Lasagna Run" to Estes Park, the Black Hills Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota, and the "Post-Mother's Day MILF Run." "That's usually the wife-focused event," says Dave, who's a physicist in his day job. "We start our ride at Victoria's Secret. We try to do stuff that vanilla people do, only it's stuff that we want to do together without any vanillas."
