For a flick that revolves around a male prostitute, Boy Culture features little in the way of explicit sex. Instead, it focuses upon elements that seldom turn up at multiplexes during the summer movie season: compelling characters who have interesting things to say.

The tale revolves around X (Derek Magyar), who uses his profession as an excuse to avoid emotional entanglements. Nevertheless, a relationship slowly blossoms between him and his roommate, Andrew (Darryl Stephens), with one of X's clients, a distinguished older man named Gregory (Patrick Bauchau), helping to inspire the pair to take a romantic leap of faith. Such simple plot points could have turned dull in lesser hands. But director Allan Brocka draws first-rate performances from Magyar and the rest of the cast, and the dialogue strikes a fine balance between cynicism and sincerity. The result is a sexy love story, with the emphasis on love.

Boy Culture unspools four times today at Starz FilmCenter in the Tivoli, with the first screening taking place at 2:35 p.m. Tickets are $5.75 for Denver Film Society members, $6.75 for seniors (and during matinees) and $8.75 for the general public. Shows continue throughout the week; details are at 303-820-3456 or www.denverfilm.org.
