Sometimes songwriters take well until adulthood to reach a level of creative maturity warranting attention by anyone beyond their peer group. Cody Crump got a jump start, through extensive experience in his youth, being an old soul, or both. Whatever the source of his preternatural wisdom, he reaches surprising depths in articulating the swirl of emotions and thought we all experience but find difficult to express. Whether playing alone or with full accompaniment, Crump (due at the Meadowlark on Friday, January 30) sounds like a particularly insightful and sensitive old friend helping you to understand and transcend what ails your psyche. With gently powerful atmospherics and masterful musicianship, this songwriter doesn't hit you over the head with his greatness; he doesn't need to. His vocal talent and strong songwriting are proof enough.
