Maybe the only thing you know about the Salvation Army is that volunteers ring bells in front of storefronts during the holidays and stand next to red metal buckets to hold your donations. But the group is really “a 365, twelve-month-a-year organization,” says spokesman Roger Miller. “The money we collect in the kettles stays in the area where it’s collected. Aurora gets theirs, Broomfield gets theirs; it doesn’t go back into one pot nationally. It’s collected locally and spent locally.”

Now that you know that, you should also know that this is Salvation Army Week, and today the Army is celebrating at Civic Center Park with a canteen (mobile kitchen) serving up grub from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. “We’ll talk about Salvation Army programs and what we do in Denver, and bring some awareness of the Salvation Army into the off-season, as it were.”

The Civic Center event runs until 3 p.m.; other highlights of Salvation Army Week include a senior health forum on Thursday, a canned-food drive and more at the Rockies game on Friday night, and a Saturday stand-down in Aurora with veterans, plus an information session to let veterans know what benefits they qualify for.
