About twelve years ago, just after Denver native, author and former hobo Zebu Recchia (aka Eddy Joe Cotton) started the Yard Dogs Road Show, singer and trombonist Lily Rose Love joined the troupe. Since then, she’s watched the group grow from a traveling three-person hobo jug band into a visually stunning vaudeville-type outfit with more than a dozen performers combining burlesque, magic acts, sword-swallowing, performance art, dancing girls inspired by 1940s Las Vegas, live music and more.

Tonight’s performance will combine new numbers as well as some favorite old ones. “A lot of it seems to be about fantastical dreams,” Love says. “Carousel horses, queens of faraway tropical islands, dance numbers and a magic trick or two.”

While the group has grown in size, its fan base has also ballooned. Five years ago, the Yard Dogs played the 300-person Bender’s Tavern, but when they roll into town today with Santa Cruz-based Devil Makes Three, which puts a punk spin on the blues, they’ll be at the 1,600-capacity Ogden Theatre, 935 East Colfax Avenue. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the show starts at 9. Tickets are $23 in advance, $25 at the door. For more information, go to www.ogdentheatre.net or www.yarddogsroadshow.com.
