When MegaFauna owner John McCaskill conceived of the idea for the Final Friday monthly summer series, his mission was simple: to build community and help support local artists and businesses. What emerged is a twenty-block-long music walk and urban bazaar that starts tonight and includes 27 bands — among them, L.A.M.A. Live, Petals of Spain and Varlet — playing across fifteen venues in the River North Art District.

“We hope that through this type of structure people will get a chance to know that church down the block or that venue that they’ve never had a chance to stop into, or that restaurant that they’ve always wanted to try,” says McCaskill. “We’re trying to push the conscious local effort to get out, show your support for local, and see how that pays itself forward.”

The party, which also includes food and local artisan vendors, starts tonight at 6 p.m. in the neighborhood surrounding the MegaFauna shop, at 2701 Larimer Street. Donations of $5 to $15 are encouraged to support the local bands and will get you a wrist-band that includes discounts on tickets to the Westword Music Showcase. Last Friday of every month, 6 p.m.-midnight. Starts: May 31. Continues through Aug. 31, 2013
