Vail skiing legend Chris Anthony is one of the featured athletes again this time around, revisiting the Chymbulak ski area, a Kazakhstani spot that he first skied for a Warren Miller film seventeen years ago. “For me, it was a return to a part of the world I thought would be a once-in-a-lifetime trip,” Anthony says. “When we first visited, there was a single chairlift practically falling off the cable, and now there’s a high-speed quad. But the conditions there are still very dangerous: The snow is so dry, light and fluffy that the off-piste stuff doesn’t really develop a base to it. If you don’t keep your skis on top, you’ll sink down through to the ground, not to mention you could literally be skiing over landmines in some places. This time I brought much better skis...and a helmet.”
