Last week, the city denied Rockbar's request to renew its hotel and restaurant liquor license, but extended its temporary license until November 7, allowing the bar to keep pouring. But the bar's cabaret license, which is required for live entertainment and had also expired, was pulled immediately. And now the city has denied a request for special cabaret event permits at Rockbar. Under Hotel Restaurant LLC, Rockbar recently applied for special event cabaret permits for October 19, October 20, October 26, October 27, October 31 and November 2 and 3 -- all prime-time dates for Halloween parties. In fact, Morreale's El Diablo is having a big Day of the Dead party on October 30, the day before the building that houses that restaurant faces its own deadline with the city.
But there will be no party at Rockbar. Today Tom Downey, director of the Department of Excise and Licenses, denied the application for the special permits.
