The Boulder Farmers' Market, which opened for business this past Saturday (read Juliet Wittman's story about opening day here), is always the first farmers' market of the season. In fact, when Boulder introduces its Wednesday hours on May 5, only a few other markets will have started up along the Front Range. But from then on, they roll out fast, with Aurora and Northfield coming in mid-May and the big Denver markets in early June. (The Colorado Department of Agriculture keeps a comprehensive, and current, list of the state's farmers' markets here.)

If you can't wait, head over to 200 Santa Fe Drive next Saturday, when James and Irina Bertini will be holding forth at Denver Urban Homesteading from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. They keep their market -- which features fresh foods from within a 100-mile radius (or at least from somewhere in Colorado) -- open year-round, a noble calling that earned their place the title Best Farmers' Market in the Best of Denver 2010.
