There are plenty of arbitrary, food-related holidays, but one dedicated to doughnuts? Now, that something to get excited about. Not everyone is celebrating National Donuts Day -- such local shops as Walton Donuts and Marty's 47th Street Donuts, along with the chain Winchell's Donut House, are staying out of the fray -- but there are a few big guys you can count on for snacks.

Drop into any Krispy Kreme, wait in (a likely very long) line, and get a free doughnut, no purchase necessary.

LaMar's Donuts is offering a "free gourmet donut with a hole" -- no purchase required, according to the company website. it's also making it easy to donate the money you would be spending to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, if you are so inclined.

Dunkin' Donuts is giving away donuts with the purchase of a drink, excluding bottled beverages. The website stipulates that the offer runs "while supplies last" -- so if you are too late or too lazy to score a free treat, DD is also giving away $50 gift cards on its Twitter (@DunkinDonuts) account for people who successfully answer some doughnut trivia.
