Sure, fighting is archaic and cruel and immature. But sometime in your life you may wind up in an unavoidable situation that turns physical. And if you're like me and you have no idea how to execute that arm-motion activity the English language refers to as a "punch," you're probably gonna be in some trouble. To prepare yourself for such a scenario -- and get a workout in the process -- DaVarryl Williamson and Tentiko, a new events company, will be offering an instructional boxing course from noon to 2 p.m. tomorrow, January 12.

Tentiko experience curator Joseph De La Cruz says the Saturday afternoon boxing lesson is "going to be a learn-by-doing experience," and when it's over "you'll understand what it takes to be a boxer." While you won't be fighting other people or getting punches thrown your way, De La Cruz cautions that "it's going to be a little bit more intensive than other classes."

In addition to getting a workout and seeing how a world-class boxer trains for a fight, you'll also have the opportunity to converse with Williamson about his career and tour his highly ranked boxing gym. "You'll get to chat with him about his boxing path," De La Cruz says. "You'll check out his gym, his belts and jump in the ring with him as well. You're pretty much gonna learn by having your gloves on your hands and getting into it."

And Williamson could be just the person to free you from your inhibitions. Aside from being a former U.S. National Heavyweight Champion and competing in the Olympics, Williamson has also tried out for the NFL's Indianapolis Colts and even performed as a standup comic.

"He's a very sweet gentleman," De La Cruz says. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't even a little bit intimidated before meeting him, but he was very nice and the environment is incredibly welcoming. It's definitely a good place to be."

Tentiko, a company that De La Cruz describes as "looking to craft the best experiences we can by working with Denver's local talent," just started up in December. As an experience curator, De La Cruz says he finds creative individuals in the area and then sets up events and workshops where people have the opportunity to learn that individual's specific craft.

Upcoming Tentiko events include an introductory professional coffee-cupping course, a behind-the-scenes look at the National Western Rodeo and a "Draw Yourself as a Zombie" art workshop.

Saturday's boxing class will cost $50 per person, and will run from noon to 2 p.m. at the Touch 'Em Up Boxing Gym, at 3910 South Kalamath Street in Englewood. Sign up in advance (a requirement) on the Tentiko website.
