"It's going to be an interactive lyricism display -- taking some traditional methods we're used to in hip-hop and putting some different elements into it," says Mikahn of her live performance. And why did she want to work off the now famous Abramović piece?
"I really wanted to directly interact with audience members as well as other artists being who they are in this performance space along with me," says Mikahn. "I love how she draws the unexpected from the audience -- I love how her work is effective so viscerally. That's the thing that got me -- you could see her train of thought, from who she is to why she's doing this particular piece. I just identify with her so much, as she addresses so many themes that I also feel as being a woman in hip-hop. The idea that beauty is pain and there's an artist's responsibility in these things. It's a physical display, as opposed to music or painting. It's just a way of being for these moments that affect people so deeply."
There will be a musical component to Mikahn's performance, along with a live onstage interview with the artist before she begins her piece. A live fashion show featuring a line by local design house Clothes Minded will be rolled out and DJ SpydaTek will be spinning throughout the evening as well.
