Denver's Dangerous Theatre gives audiences a leg up with Black Stockings

Winnie Wenglewick was introduced to the threater through the Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival, where she volunteered for ten years. That experience so inspired her that in 2006 she opened Denver's Dangerous Theatre, and started not just producing and directing, but acting. She'll do all three with Dangerous Theatre's production of Peter McGarry's Black Stockings, which will have a three-week run here before it moves on to this year's Orlando fringe festival.

McGarry originally produced Black Stockings at the Orlando fringe festival in 2002; Wenglewick met him there, and he became a friend and mentor.

Black Stockings is a Brechtian-styled morality play about sex and war set in a brothel in Manchester, England. Two prostitutes -- Donna and Trish -- have the audience laughing until Trish reveals the ugly truth about her relationship with her granddad, a decorated WWII bomber pilot; then the mood turns dark.

Wenglewick is both directing this production and starring in it with Brittany Lacour. She decided to take the show to Orlando to experience the festival from the "other side," she says, performing in front of family and friends who have never known her as an actor.

And since Wenglewick and Lacour will be driving to Orlando, they've started an Indiegogo.com fundraising campaign so that people can help send the show to the the Florida festival. After the final Denver performance on May 4, they'll host a big Indiegogo swag sendoff party.

Black Stockings runs from April 18 through May 4, with performances Fridays at 7.30 p.m., Saturdays at 7 p.m and Sundays at 1 p.m. Tickets are $20 with a $5 discount for students, military and seniors over 62. For more information, visit Denver Dangerous Theatre.
