"Last year, five percent of movies were made by women," says Karla Rodriguez of the Denver FilmCenter. Which is exactly why this second annual edition of Women + Film Voices is imperative -- to shine a light on a corner of the film-making world that is often overlooked. The lineup for the festival, which runs March 6-11 at the Denver FilmCenter, was announced last week. It includes documentaries, animation and feature films telling the stories of women all over the globe.

Each movie will have an individual host -- either someone directly involved with the project or a relevant Denver connection -- that will lead the audience in a discussion afterward.

Some films will even take it beyond the question and answer session; 2011's Hit So Hard, the story of musician Patty Shemel, shows on Friday, March 9 and will feature a group of local female drummers playing live at the FilmCenter. While the focus on women weaves the festival together, the topics covered are diverse; the Islamic Revolution, violence against women, the triumph of female athletes and the role of women in combat are just some of the issues touched on. Present day pieces like the Iraq War veteran tale, Poster Girl, will run alongside showings like The Scarlet Letter, released in 1926, giving some historical perspective to women's roles in film.
