Editor's note: Today marks the three-week point until this year's election, and to get you in the mood for ballot-casting, The Latest Word will kick off each weekday between now and then with Buttoned Up, a look at political buttons from my family's extensive collection. The pins are evenly split, more or less, between genuine items and historical reproductions -- but all of them represent a little slice of voting history that millions of Americans will continue on November 4.

The folks working on behalf of Richard Andrew "Dick" Gephardt, a Missouri congressman, during his unsuccessful run for the White House in 2004 clearly overestimated how much women wanted Dick. Or at least this particular Dick. -- Michael Roberts
