Ward was preceded in the headlines by Detective Scott Morris. Just shy of 9:30 p.m. on November 15, as reported by the Boulder Daily Camera, Morris was pulled over on U.S. 36 near Middle Fork Road for going more than twenty miles per hour over the speed limit of 55.
The deputy who made the stop instantly recognized Morris. Why? According to the report cited by the Camera, the detective had been pulled over a staggering 44 times in recent years. No wonder he seemed impatient to get on with the process, allegedly responding to a request to perform a sobriety test by asking, "Can't you just cut me a ticket?"The answer turned out to be "no" for a number of compelling reasons. For one thing, he allegedly looked and smelled drunk; he subsequently registered a blood alcohol content of .104, well over the legal limit for intoxication. For another, he had an already drained bottle of peppermint schnapps in the console of his Honda and a full bottle of vodka ready and waiting on the passenger seat, not far from a loaded revolver. Also in the vehicle: SWAT team gear highlighted by assault-rifle magazines. Hence, a possible prohibited-use-of-a-weapon count supplemented suspected speeding and DUI as reasons for his arrest.
And Ward? She was reportedly pulled over in Thornton at about 2:15 a.m. on December 4. Unlike Morris, she hadn't exceeded the speed limit. In fact, she was clocked at 25 miles per hour under the posted 65 mph maximum. But she is said to have weaved between the lanes -- and when she was asked why she'd been pulled over, she replied, "I'm drunk."
She should know. The 36-year-old Ward, who's been with the Boulder Police Department since 2007, was tasked with DUI enforcement.
Both Morris and Ward are currently on administrative leave from the BPD -- and pot brownies had nothing to do with the reason why.
