Whenever the Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News make similar editorial decisions -- like the day last year that both papers ran nearly identical photos of Colorado Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba -- readers who don't quite understand the particulars of the joint-operating agreement linking their business operations suspect collusion. In the case of the dailies' main page-one headlines on September 30, however, it's more a matter of great minds (or their approximations) thinking alike. After the House of Representatives' rejection of the financial bailout package and the subsequent stock plunge, Americans were left wondering, well, "What now?" -- a question so straightforward and evocative that it occurred simultaneously to editors at the Post and the Rocky. Simple is usually better -- and in this case, it was twice as nice. -- Michael Roberts
