The show -- which will feature Evans's project along with local supreme noise improvisers ANIMAL / Object, the Atlanta Poets Group out of Georgia and other Denver artists -- is designed as a look at real and perceived space, much like our real and perceived friendships on the Internet.
"The Internet and the social world really demands our attention a lot of the time; how do we carve out space and time just to do nothing and be present?" That's a question that Leavitt hopes the audience will keep in mind during this unique performance journey. The musical component definitely pushes the boundaries when it comes to a traditional instrumental experience and the Atlanta Poets Group works in a similar way, using unconventional methods to perform poetry.
"Atlanta Poets Group does a lot of conceptual poetry and language-based poetry -- they do this thing called polyphonics where they will read three poems at once," explains Leavitt.
Local performers David D'Agostino, Claire Leavitt, Mango Katz, Ron Zito, Corrina Espinoza, Tyler Christopherson and Shaun Carter will also be putting themselves through what Leavitt describes as an obstacle of sorts -- but he doesn't want to give too much away. "The performance-art aspect will be sort of in response to the music and poetry, involving an installation set-up at Hamsterdam," he says.
And part of this performance-art aspect will involve Leavitt finally meeting Internet acquaintance Evans.
"Pockets of Contextless Waste As Points" happens this Saturday, October 18, at Hamsterdam, 3547 Brighton Boulevard in Denver. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. There's a suggested donation of $5 at the door -- and Leavitt also suggests you bring an open mind.
