Flatirons Food Film Festival Throws a Fundraiser Dinner With Five Boulder Chefs on August 4

The Flatirons Food Film Festival is entering its third season of culinary-themed movies and guest appearances. While tickets have yet to go on sale for the series, which runs from October 21 to 25, you can get an early start on pairing cuisine and cinema while also chipping in to help bring great movies and guest speakers to Boulder for the festival. On August 4, the Film Festival is hosting a benefit event called Fims, Chefs and Glorious Song, which will bring together five Boulder chefs who will each prepare a dish based on a short food film. Live performances from Opera on Tap Colorado will also be part of the night's entertainment.

Festival founder and organizer Julia Joun explains that the benefit event will raise money to pay for travel expenses for special guests at the Film Festival. One of the movies featured this year will be Farnang: The True Story of Andy Ricker, and the subject of the film, Thai food explorer and restaurateur Andy Ricker (of Pok Pok fame) has committed to coming to Boulder for the screening. Other guests are still in the works.

Chefs at the benefit on August 4 will include Alex Krill and Dave Query of Jax Fish House, Erik Skokan of Black Cat Farm Table Bistro, John Platt of Riffs Urban Fare, Kelly Whitaker of Basta and Kyle Mendenhall of the Kitchen. Beer and wine will be served and a live auction will give guests the opportunity to contribute more to the cause. Robin Chocolates and Fior di Latte will provide desserts. Tickets are $55 in advance and can be purchased on the Flatiron Food Film Festival Eventbrite page.

"These are big passions for me — food and film," says Joun, who started the festival after having been a volunteer for the International Film Series at the University of Colorado. "This is a food town: nutrition, farming, agriculture, the pleasure of food and art of food are all here." 

In addition to six (or possibly seven) feature-length films, other events during festival week will include short films, a Boulder sushi crawl organized by Local Table Tours to complement the movie East Side Sushi,  a permaculture presentation and tour, a presentation and conversation about school food issues with chef Ann Cooper, and other panels and appearances related to the movie agenda. The other feature films will be the Search for General Tso, Inhabit, Slow Food Bites Episode 4: Food for the Community, Lunch Love Community, and the Bee Keeper.
