Update: Extra Tickets to Film on the Rocks Prince Tribute on Sale at 4 p.m. Today

Update: Tickets to the Film on the Rocks special screening of Purple Rain — complete with a local all-star tribute concert to Prince — sold out in under 24 hours last Friday. Due to overwhelming demand, the Denver Film Society and DFS & Denver Arts & Venues have decided to open the show up to concert capacity, releasing additional tickets at 4 p.m. today. So move fast!

In a bold move, just two days after Film on the Rocks announced its 2016 season, it's already made changes: The program will now kick off two weeks earlier, with a screening of Prince's Purple Rain on Thursday, May 12, at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. And FOTR, put on by the Denver Film Society and Denver Arts & Venues, has also revealed the TBD season closer scheduled for September 6: last year's global hit Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

“We know you never meant to cause us any sorrow, but we mourn your tragic passing,” says Britta Erickson, DFS festival director, of Prince's death. “We are looking forward to celebrating the life of a legend the best way we know how, by pulling together some of Denver’s best musicians for a performance you won’t forget and showing the 1984 classic, Purple Rain.” The musicians playing the tribute will be announced later.
Although many people may have popped Purple Rain into their DVD player (or even VCR) last night and a theater or two will most likely screen it in the coming weeks, playing the film at Red Rocks and letting Prince’s music ring loud through the legendary amphitheater — the famed artist never got the chance to play the famous venue, despite having made tour stops at the Ogden Theatre, Fiddler’s Green and the long-gone McNichols Arena and Rainbow Music Hall — will be an unbeatable sendoff for the star. And the show will go on no matter what, purple rain or shine.

In making the announcement of the Prince addition, FOTR also took the opportunity to announce that its secret season finale is indeed Star Wars: The Force Awakens (a stray clue had led some to guess a Star Wars title). The 2015 continuation of the beloved saga will also become the first Star Wars title to play Film on the Rocks. with another set of special musical guests which is guaranteed to bring the excitement on Tuesday, September 6.
Tickets for these two new additions go on sale with the rest of the announced films at noon today, April 22, at denverfilm.org. All shows are $15 general admission — also available on the day of the show at the Red Rocks box office — and $47 and up for VIP Peak Experience packages.
