  • Sweet Cow

    637 Front St., Louisville Boulder

    303-666-4269

You really haven't had ice cream until you've had Sweet Cow's. Spike-haired Drew Honness, a young DIY-style entrepreneur who got his start in the ice cream business scooping for Springs-based Josh & John's, runs his ecologically correct concern in downtown Louisville with a friendly air that extends to kids and adults alike, and the ice cream is to die for, no foolin'. Inspired by a 1950s soda shop, the menu features scoops, shakes, sundaes and floats, all elevated by the quality of that vital ingredient. The Almond Joy cone comes triple-loaded with ginormous chunks of chocolate, almond and coconut in a creamy, perfectly sweetened base; other flavors include an incredible Chocolate Coffee Bean concoction, Ozo Coffee and a tart Key Lime Pie -- and that's not the half of it. The large patio in front makes enjoying these sweets even sweeter.

Ice cream lovers throughout Denver know that Bonnie Brae Ice Cream has been much more than a neighborhood business since it opened in 1986. The ice cream shop is as much of a destination as the finest dining room or downtown hot spot. Any day of the week, regardless of the weather, there's likely to be a line out the door at the corner of South University Boulevard and East Ohio Avenue.

  • Churn & Burn

    No Address Central Denver

    303-500-1242

Barbecue and ice cream: that's a winning combination in any book. Churn & Burn offers both, plying Denver's streets with goofy but delicious creations like a cornbread waffle bowl loaded with smoked meat, mac and cheese, barbecue sauce and coleslaw. But the crew's traditional barbecue holds its own even without the bells and whistles: slabs of peppery brisket, pulled pork, chicken, hot links, pork belly and even smoked portabello mushrooms all satisfy our prehistoric urge to gorge on proteins cooked over fire. Ice cream flavors change regularly, but expect equally eccentric combos, like an ice cream sandwich made with shortcake cupcakes or brownies. First you burn, then you churn — or switch it up and have dessert first; you'll love Churn & Burn either way.

  • Dang

2211 Oneida St., Denver Park Hill/Mayfair/Lowry

    720-550-8834

The hungry weirdo who was the first person to dip fries into soft-serve ice cream turned out to be a genius, and the team behind Little Man Ice Cream is a close second, since fries and ice cream are the specialty at Dang. A pint of piping hot fries will cost you $4 — well worth it when you pair the food with one of the rotating soft-serves, which might be banana pudding, salted caramel, Berry Blast, peanut butter, vegan chocolate or a swirl of two flavors. You can also get specialty cones, tons of fun toppings and the Bomb Cyclone, Dang's upscale take on the classic Blizzard.

  • Eiskaffee

1112 Broadway, Denver Golden Triangle/La Alma

    720-442-7500

This European-style cafe from the owners of ice cream favorite High Point Creamery opened inside the 11th Avenue Hostel in the summer of 2022. Eiskaffee works as either a coffee shop or an ice cream shop, but the best options are those that combine the two, like affogatos made with any flavor (definitely try the Bavarian cream), shots of espresso served in chocolate-coated edible "cone" cups, and the namesake eiskaffee, a combination of coffee made with locally air-roasted Kaladi beans and ice cream topped with whipped cream and served with a waffle-cone cookie.

  • Gelato Boy

    3501 Wazee St. North Denver

    720-548-0416

This is the Denver branch of Bryce and Giulia Licht's Boulder gelato shop, Fior, rebranded for a more urban audience. The name comes from the nickname Bryce earned while hanging out at a gelato shop in Italy, hoping to spot Giulia, the woman who had stolen his heart and then vanished. (Of course, she eventually showed up again, and now they're married.) The usual cones and cups of the couple's rich, creamy gelato are available, but hold out for the signature Gelato Boy sandwich, made with your choice of gelato on a warm Vietnamese fried bread (almost like an un-glazed doughnut sprinkled with sesame seeds) courtesy of Vinh Xuong Bakery.

High Point owners Erika Thomas and Chad Stutz formulate each batch of their ice cream with the minds of chefs and the spirits of giddy children. So nearly every flavor has a little surprise, whether it's the curious hint of miso in the cherry-chocolate or the bursts of violet fudge that hide in a creamy lime base. When booze is used, it's used with abandon, as in the Tin Cup whiskey with pistachio brittle, and when ingredients are listed, you know those flavors will be bold — whether it's Earl Grey tea, fresh mint leaves or the basil in the blackberry-basil swirl. Housemade cones, ice-cream bombe cakes and rich milkshakes add to the sweet allure of this second location inside Denver Central Market, making for a pair of locations to get Denver's best brain freeze.

  • The Inventing Room Dessert Shop

    4433 W. 29th Ave. Northwest Denver

    303-885-2802

Willy Wonka take notice: Denver has its own magician of all things sweet. Chef and inventor Ian Kleinman opened the Inventing Room, his science-lab dessert bar in the Ballpark neighborhood in October 2015, offering liquid-nitrogen ice cream, grape-jelly cotton candy, exploding whipped cream and plenty of other delights. Kids and adults alike queued up to watch Kleinman and his team go to work amid billowing smoke, spinning sugar and crackling, house-made pop-rocks. Kleinman moved the Inventing Room to West Highland in October 2017.

  • Liks Ice Cream Parlor

    2039 E. 13th Ave., Denver Capitol Hill/Uptown/City Park

    303-321-2370

Liks is a Capitol Hill mainstay that continues to attract both children and meandering urban couples, in warm weather and in cold, who appreciate the shop's dedication to craft that produces damn good ice cream (yogurt and sherbet, too). Each batch is made in lots of twelve gallons or less, for the sake of the ingredients, and stored at a specific temperature, for the sake of texture. Perhaps the coolest part of the Liks experience: If you call ahead, Liks will personally craft a favorite flavor from your childhood — or your imagination.

  • Little Man Ice Cream

    2620 16th St., Denver Highland/Lower Highland

    303-455-3811

Paul Tamburello, a developer who's doing several projects in northwest Denver, drew inspiration from his own past when he created Little Man Ice Cream. His grandfather had owned an ice cream store in Chicago in the 1930s, and he thought LoHi could use a store of its own. But not just any store: Tamburello created a shop that looks like a giant milk can. In the summer, this spot serves up handmade ice cream in homemade waffle cones, hand-mixed sodas, ice cream bars and sandwiches, root beer floats -- the works. And in the winter, it offers an assortment of hot soups, chili, fresh-baked bread and hot chocolate. But no matter the season, Little Man looks cool.

Ice cream can be so overpriced these days; what was once an affordable post-soccer game treat for kids has become the culinary equivalent of cold gold. But Magill's is the exception. With a nostalgic vibe from decades ago, Magill's offers a heck of a lot of ice cream that won't require that you break the bank or fork over lots of cold, hard cash. For added fun, go on a summer day and enjoy your ice cream outside on the benches, licking up the Magill's experience.

How about Key lime pie and coconut ice cream with rum? Or maybe s'mores ice cream spiked with bourbon? No matter what you decide, each treat is made with goods from Little Man Ice Cream and comes in a giant glass complete with whipped cream if you so desire.
