Coffee's always on at Cafe Zuri, a quaint cafe that joined the Highland lineup in the fall of 2012. Husband-and-wife owners Tomas Vojtek and Marianne Rutzer are from Prague and Switzerland, respectively, Vojtek explains, “and we wanted to do something small and local.” So they offer locally roasted coffee from Coda, French pastries from Trompeau Bakery in Englewood, apple strudel from Praha Restaurant in Longmont, and ice cream from Bonnie Brae. But there are international influences at Zuri, too: The art comes from a market in Port-au-Prince and was acquired when Rutzer was in Haiti meeting the two children that the couple, who had their own baby about the time they opened Zuri, are adopting. Caribou Coffee

    2721 W. 120th Ave. Westminster, CO 80031
303-410-1305 Diminutive in size compared to its Seattle-based Goliath of a competitor, Minnesota-based Caribou Coffee is nonetheless the second largest coffee shop chain in the U.S., with more than 400 locations. Besides classic coffee and espresso drinks like Americanos, lattes, macchiatos, and cold-brew iced coffee, the java house with an abstract reindeer logo offers the Depth Charge, brewed coffee spiked with a shot of espresso, for only the most hardcore caffeine junkies. There's also an extensive selection of chocolate beverages like the Campfire Mocha with mini ‘mallows and chocolate chips, plus frozen drinks called Caribou Coolers and iced and hot teas. Breakfast sandwiches, muffins and grilled cheese sandwiches round out the menu, which is served in an appropriately rustic setting with plenty of wood, stone accents and in most cases, a fireplace for chilly Denver / Boulder java hounds to cozy up to. • Coffee at the Point

    Coffee at the Point

    710 E. 26th Ave. Denver, CO 80205

Coffee at the Point is a cozy, welcome addition to the Five Points neighborhood. Owner Ryan Cobbins has transformed the former Blackberries space into a community coffee haven serving such local products as Novo Coffee and wines by Cottonwood Cellars -- the latter available by the flight, glass or bottle. In the morning the place is packed with locals enjoying fresh-brewed coffees, teas, espresso drinks and breakfast burritos; business types pop in for lunches of sandwiches and soups. In the afternoons, customers dig into smooth, icy gelato and cookies, cakes and pastries while they take advantage of the shop's free wireless. There's a quiet space off to the side of the main area for people who need to concentrate on their work -- and a row of bistro tables with intimate lighting for couples who want to concentrate on each other, canoodling while they caffeinate. Coffee at the Point is also conveniently located by Crossroads Theater, for those who need a little pick-me-up to get through the next act. More >>

  • Common Grounds

    Common Grounds

    1550 17th St. Denver, CO 80202
303-296-9248 Common Grounds has been slinging coffee in Denver since the early '90s, long before the popularity of super-chains and Frappuccinos. The original location is still going strong in the Highlands, while the downtown spot moved to different digs across the street in 2009. However, the LoDo locations did keep its most notable feature: a beer and wine license. It also kept its fans who appreciate getting consistently good, locally roasted coffee in a warm but sophisticated environment. A popular spot for breakfast and lunch in LoDo, Common Grounds offers a spread of burritos and pastries as well as freshly made salads, sandwiches and soups. At night, regulars come for the wi-fi, comfy chairs and quirks (including an upright piano) that accompany a bar that goes far beyond coffee and tea. Fridays and Saturdays welcome live musicians who kindly entertain for tips. More >>

  • Crema Coffee House

    Crema Coffee House

2862 Larimer St. Denver, CO 80205
720-235-2995 Crema Coffeehouse draws its name from the rich, caramel-colored foam that caps any decent shot of espresso right after it's pulled. And that's the primary job of the baristas at Crema: to pull decent shots of espresso. They also brew coffee from a handful of roasters, including local outfits Novo and Ozo. Crema is located on Larimer Street, just above the Ballpark neighborhood. It's one of the most eclectic areas in town, and local artists and musicians spend a lot of time on the couches in this sparse, urban shop. More >>

  • The Cup Espresso Cafe

    The Cup Espresso Cafe

1521 Pearl St. Boulder, CO 80302
303-449-5173 The owners of the Cup Espresso Cafe are dead serious about their coffee; they get it from Boulder's Conscious Coffees, a roasting company that specializes in organic, fair-trade coffee and works directly with the small farming cooperatives that grow their product. On the Cup website, you'll find detailed descriptions not just of how to brew a perfect cup, but also of the regions where the coffee comes from and the conditions under which growers work. All of which means you can feel thoroughly virtuous while enjoying the warm, bright atmosphere, pulling apart a flaky croissant and sipping your delicious, artfully drawn brew. More >>
