Tea Pot Lounge

Tea Pot Lounge

I looked at about a dozen different flowers, including a beautifully frosty and sweet Black Ice OG, some decent Super Silver Haze and the same Super Silver Haze/OG cross dubbed Kizzle that the Cannasseur developed.
Groundswell

Groundswell

Some cuts looked better than others, like the NYC Diesel and the Berry Skunk, but most looked well-dried and cured -- healthy buds from a medium-sized warehouse.
Top Shelf Alternatives

Top Shelf Alternatives

Top Shelf Alternatives also had two special strains, Blacktooth Grin and Lavender, at $15 per gram all the way up. I got a good look at both, and neither seemed to be of any better quality than the rest of the items on the shelf.

  • Gaia

    Gaia's Plant-Based Medicine

    5926 E. Colfax Ave. Denver, CO 80220
    303-573-6337

http://gaiapbm.com Gaia PlantBased Medicine is in a decent East Colfax location, with a sidewalk storefront situated between a salon and one of the best low-key lunch spots in Denver, La Guarida Cubana. Prepare to be buzzed back through the steel-plated wall and security door for the patient lounge. It's a clean, cozy place that feels more like a tossed-together twenty-something's pad (or a Nederland coffee shop) than a themed, corporate dispensary. The bud bar takes up the entire space next door to the lobby; it runs along the back wall as you walk in and is crammed with edibles, pipes, hash and pot. When we were in last, Gaia was undergoing an overhaul in its grow room, and the buds on display have likely changed since then. Read our full dispensary review of Gaia's Plant-Based Medicine. • The Giving Tree of Denver

    The Giving Tree of Denver

    2707 W. 38th Ave. Denver, CO 80211
    303-477-8888

http://tgtree.com For better or worse, the Giving Tree does things a little differently than other dispensaries -- and has for a long time. The initial patient questionnaire for medical customers isn't the normal boilerplate material crafted by a lawyer; instead, the dispensary asks questions about what strains you prefer, whether you find that smoking or eating helps your condition more, and whether you're seeking more of a head or a body high. Appropriately, the Giving Tree is located next door to a florist in an old shopping center on West 38th Avenue, tucked into a tiny, somewhat discreet storefront. The setup at the bud bar is nice, with two counters separated by a refrigerated display case full of edibles that makes the place feel a bit like a deli. The beige walls are a welcome change from the seemingly mandatory green hues that most dispensaries opt for. Instead of simply pointing out the best strains in the house or waiting for your questions, budtenders here start out by asking what you're in for and what you look for in strains. • Golden Meds

    Golden Meds

4620 Peoria St. Denver, CO 80239
    303-307-4645

Located right off I-70, Golden Meds embraces the get-in-and-get-out approach of purchasing cannabis. There is no waiting room -- just a two-way mirror and a slot for handing over your I.D. Customers and patients wait in a row of seats in the back of the room and wait for the lone medical budtender or next available recreational tender. Golden Meds typically has about twenty strains in stock and accepts credit/debit cards as well as cash. It claims the selection of hash it carries has won multiple awards at the 710 and High Times Cannabis Cups. Pipes and other smoking accessories are also available. Don't go to Golden Meds expecting a lot of help. The staff is overworked, and the line of customers in the back creates a rushed environment. If you're in the area and know exactly what you want, it might be worth checking out, but the atmosphere probably won't bring you back. More >>

  • Good Chemistry

    Good Chemistry

    330 E. Colfax Ave. Denver, CO 80203
    720-524-4657

http://goodchem.org Good Chemistry resides in a thin, narrow Colfax storefront with frosted glass and a New York-style retractable metal security gate hanging above the entrance and huge front window. The tiny reception area/waiting room is a little bit more weathered, and there's a new, pretty awesome oil painting of a Cthulhu-esque octopus creature that the owners managed to match up with the red vintage theater seats they've had since day one. Scientific glass artwork is on display in what feels like an old hair salon or fancy barbershop, with antique checkered tile floors and marble countertops. Flat-screen televisions and tech stations for the budtenders give this dispensary a futuristic vibe but despite the sleek facade, the prices at Good Chemistry are more reasonable than at many other dispensaries in the downtown area. http://goodmedsnetwork.com There's an unwritten rule with restaurant critiquing that you don't visit a place in the first month or so after it opens, since the chef needs a few weeks to break in the staff and grow accustomed to the flow of the operation. The same could apply to medical marijuana dispensaries -- except that if you wait until the shop has been open a few weeks, you'll miss all the herb from the initial harvest. Weighing the two arguments, I delayed (until recently) my visit to Good Meds in Lakewood, which opened in February in the spot formerly occupied by Rocky Mountain Ways. • The Grass Station

    The Grass Station

4125 Elati St. Denver, CO 80216
    303-546-3626

http://grassstationco.com The Grass Station is down the street from the Regency dorms. With the hotel's 180-degree turnaround, the area doesn't seem as skeevy anymore. Industrial, sure. The dispensary is in a concrete, pre-fab structure painted gray, not unlike the other warehouse businesses around it. The only thing setting the Grass Station apart is that it has more cars coming and going from the parking lot instead of big-rig trucks. It's industrial in the authentic way, not in the "let's expose some brick and HVAC work like a New York City loft" industrial way. But the inside of the Grass Station feels like walking into Oz: green walls, bright lights and a table full of herb to check out. No decorations on the wall other than a chalk price board. The bud bars are two clean, sleek countertops jutting into the room from the walls about two-thirds of the way back. Buds can be found in display jars, while the stock is kept behind the bar in another room connected by a pass-through. It's like the pharmacy window at a hospital, or the serving window of a restaurant. Almost everything is impressive, even the lowest-tier strains. More >>

  • The Green Depot

    The Green Depot

    2020 S. Broadway Denver, CO 80210
    303-728-9962

http://greendepotdenver.com The South Broadway storefront currently occupied by the Green Depot is the former home of numerous failed dispensaries. At one point during the early 2000s, the place was home to a garage specializing in custom choppers, so the waiting room is a massive former motorcycle display room. Compared to the front of the store, the bud bar feels like a closet; it's cozy and narrow, putting you right up against the glass display counter containing clear Mason jars filled with cannabis. After having served medical customers since 2010, the Green Depot was one of the first shops to offer recreational sales to the general public in 2014. Customers will find anywhere from twelve to fifteen carefully selected strains, edibles, drinks and an array of concentrates, from shatter to caviar to BHO. The staff strives to provide an open, non-threatening atmosphere, encouraging customers to ask questions and take their time browsing. Read our full dispensary review of the Green Depot. More >>
