Tea Pot Lounge

Tea Pot Lounge

I looked at about a dozen different flowers, including a beautifully frosty and sweet Black Ice OG, some decent Super Silver Haze and the same Super Silver Haze/OG cross dubbed Kizzle that the Cannasseur developed.

Some cuts looked better than others, like the NYC Diesel and the Berry Skunk, but most looked well-dried and cured -- healthy buds from a medium-sized warehouse.
Top Shelf Alternatives

Top Shelf Alternatives

Top Shelf Alternatives also had two special strains, Blacktooth Grin and Lavender, at $15 per gram all the way up. I got a good look at both, and neither seemed to be of any better quality than the rest of the items on the shelf.

    The Haven

777 Canosa Ct. Denver, CO 80204
303-534-2600 The Haven is one of a number of Strainwise dispensaries that incorporated recreational sales into its existing medical business beginning in 2014. Conveniently located near the Sun Valley light rail stop, the Haven carries a range of strains, plus some extras like caviar, concentrates and top-shelf shake that lives up to its name. There's something for both medical and recreational customers at the Haven: Medical consumers will be pleased to know that the budtenders at the Haven can help them put together a pain journal to help track which strains are most effective, and all recreational product is pre-packaged for quick, efficient shopping. Members get access to specialty strains not available to the general public -- and Strainwise takes special care of its flower. More >>

  • The Healing House Denver

    The Healing House Denver

    2383 S. Downing St. Denver, CO 80210
720-379-3816 The Healing House Denver has a different vibe from the quirky-antique-store feel of its sister shop in Lakewood. There are no murals of stoner trains rounding the mountain painted on the walls, and the rows and rows and rows (and rows) of edibles are nowhere in sight. Instead, the crew took over the former home of Urban Cannabis and has done a great job re-imagining the space, turning it into a sleek, modern, surprisingly green-free environment. Before, the shop was sectioned off into rooms; now it's just one large space. A birch-and-glass counter runs the entire length of the shop, with medical on one side and recreational on the other. The bud is the same on both sides, according to one of the budtenders milling around behind the counter. The only difference is in the pricing. Recreational also has the same wax. The bud speaks for itself: sativa on the left, indica on the right, with a dozen or so strains on each side. Read our full dispensary review of the Healing House Denver. More >>

  • The Healing House

    The Healing House

    10712 W. Alameda Ave. Lakewood, CO 80226
303-988-5255 The Healing House menu is freaking huge. The shop pretty much at the western end of Alameda, just a few miles before it crooks southwest around Green Mountain and ends at the foothills. But both the quality of the organic, soil-grown herb and (notably) the selection are well worth the fifteen-minute drive from Denver. "Mom-and-pop shop" is one way to describe Healing House, but that's not quite right. It's more like walking into a secondhand music or quirky antique store, with hand-me-down glass cabinets and stuff thrown everywhere around the perimeter of the center -- pipes in one corner, edibles in another, clothes here, bud there. There are strange folksy murals of trains and (and one strangely Rockwell-esque samurai) painted on the walls of the squatty brick building. It's clean, but pieced together with a non-flowing hippie vibe. The result is really homey, like the pad of that pot-smoking older Deadhead named Tony who lived across the street from you in college. • The Health Center Uptown

    The Health Center Uptown

1736 Downing St. Denver, CO 80218

The Health Center is a tiny recreational and medical marijuana center in a tiny house on a tiny block in the Uptown neighborhood. What isn't little, though, was the selection of unique strains more than worth taking home. The little Victorian home-turned-MMC is hard to miss, since it stands alone on a block with an empty lot next to it. Inside, what was either a mud room or the kitchen has been turned into the small patient intake area. There's really not much to the space other than the purple walls and window into the receptionist area, but take a second to check out the old pictures of the building hanging in a frame on the wall near the door. At one time, it looked more like a crack house than the oversized dollhouse it resembles today. The inside of the house is as small as you would expect it to be -- probably not more than 900 square feet in total. But it's a very swank 900 square feet. Dark wood floors contrast well with the stark-white window trim and baseboards, as well as the Colorado flag-blue paint on the walls, while the huge (for the building) windows let in loads of natural light. The shop is also decorated well and avoids any claustrophobic cluttering by keeping the antique furniture and decorations minimal, simple and (appropriately) small. Very clean and professional. The seating area for the patient waiting room is built into the large bay-window kitchen, with a small coffee table stacked with magazines as well as a book containing information on the strains the center carries, plus a price breakdown for members and non-members. The concentrates are worth checking out, too -- the Health Center won the 2014 710 Cup. Read our full dispensary review of the Health Center Uptown. More >>

  • The Health Center University Hills

    The Health Center University Hills

    2777 S. Colorado Blvd. Denver, CO 80222
303-758-9997 The Health Center's two recreational and medical marijuana locations couldn't be more drastically different in form, with the Uptown branch giving off a quaint, cozy, neighborhood vibe and the University Hills outlet coming off as much more straightforward and businesslike. But what unites them is what matters most: quality cannabis and low prices worth making the dispensaries your primary centers for. The University Hills shop takes up the bottom floor of a two-story building far to the south down Colorado Boulevard, with a few spots out front for parking and more in the back after squeezing through a narrow alleyway. There are signs everywhere warning people against parking next door at Junkman, which is apparently fond of towing cars. A few pot-centric magazines adorn the simple, clean and coffee-stocked waiting room. The first little room is set up as a plant nursery, albeit a fancy one, with stylish wood floors, steel-and-frosted-glass counters and light boxes. The bud bar is in a similarly small room, with glass display cabinets separating the budtenders from the patients. Like THC's Uptown shop, bud is broken into two price tiers based not so much on quality as on quantity. There are also a few discount strains going for less. And the concentrates are definitely worth checking out: The Health Center won the 2014 710 Cup. Read our full dispensary review of the Health Center University Hills. More >>

    The Herbal Center

    1909 S. Broadway Denver, CO 80210
303-719-4372 Located on South Broadway, the Herbal Center's small waiting lounge is sectioned off by brightly colored, gaudy plastic circles and hoops hanging from the walls and ceilings. The bud bar feels cluttered thanks to numerous cabinets, a flat-screen television, all of those plastic circles, and two or three budtenders milling around. The space is loud, dramatically lit and filled with generic cannabis smells. For the most part, the bud selection is standard warehouse dispensary fare, although some buds are better than others. The main draw for the Herbal Center is its highly visible spot at one of Denver's more famously green street corners, which the low prices validate. But there are a few strains worth the trip down Broadway, and you'll save a few bucks. Read our full dispensary review of the Herbal Center. More >>
