  • Trailside Saloon

    Trailside Saloon

10360 Colorado Blvd. Denver, CO 80229
    303-457-0660

The Trailside Saloon is a folksy joint with country music playing on the speakers and locals sucking down domestic bottles at the bar and tables. The pool tables are usually busy and the bar really gets crankin' on Fridays, when the Trailside has live music. Everything from honky-tonk to classic rock comes off of the small corner stage, enlivening the crowd. (Don't get too rowdy, though: The Trailside has a bevy of security cameras to capture rabble-rousers.) A DJ and karaoke take over on Saturday, guaranteeing a rowdy weekend on the side of this here trail. More >>

  • Twist & Shout

    Twist & Shout

    2508 E. Colfax Ave. Denver, CO 80206
    303-722-1943

http://www.twistandshout.com If Twist & Shout heralds the end of the record store as we know it, well, we feel fine. With the advent of digital music files, most record stores are vanishing from the commercial landscape. But rather than passively wait for its demise, Paul and Jill Epstein are raging against the dying of the light. The sprawling Twist & Shout -- relocated in 2006 from its former home on Alameda to the Lowenstein Center on East Colfax -- brings together CDs, DVDs, vinyl, books and rock-era paraphernalia of every description in an enormous yet wonderfully warm space that consumers won’t want to leave. It’s as fine a place to shop for music as any in America, not to mention a terrific venue in which to hear special shows by touring performers. And with a roster that changes monthly, the store's Local Listening Post is a smart way to keep up with the music being made by the people in your neighborhood. More >>

  • Two a.m. Afterhours

    1144 Broadway Denver, CO 80203
    303-830-9324

http://www.coclubs.com This basement club is all about the music, which reverberates off the concrete floor. The sparsely furnished Two AM treats decor almost as an afterthought; the sheer wall coverings and translucent art tapestries are functional as well as ornamental. And the lighting's kept low, so you can easily hook up to the DJ's vibe and keep that 2 a.m. state of mind. More >>

  • The Walnut Room

    The Walnut Room

3131 Walnut St. Denver, CO 80205
    303-292-1700

http://www.thewalnutroom.com You can slum it with a slice and a drink for $5 at just about every pizza joint in town, but when you want to slum it in style, either location of the Walnut Room feels your vibe. At lunchtime, a fresh-faced server, usually of the hipster sort, will trot out an eight-inch, thin-crusted pizza topped with whatever single ingredient tickles your fancy, a cup of soup or a house salad scattered with mozzarella, and a soft-porn beverage. If you're not a proponent of pizza, not a problem: You can order a half a sandwich instead, including the "Fat Bastard," heaped with provolone, five meats and a few scant vegetables to soften the guilt (or impending coronary). There are deals on late-night slices, too, and at the original Walnut, you can enjoy your meal while listening to live music. More >>

    1096 S. Gaylord St. Denver, CO 80209
    303-777-0707

(There's also a late-night happy hour.) The large space has been revamped and is a sleek spot, not only for thirty-something after-work drinks, but also for lunch or dinner. The food is a mix of Italian and a twist on American classics. The Grille also busts out flip night, ladies' night (and a gentlemen's one, too), as well as offering a steady stream of live music, making for a most a welcoming scene. More >>

    303-430-4242

http://www.witsendcomedyclub.com Wits End Comedy Club lacks the pedigree of its local competitors; performers are more likely to be familiar from the grocery-store line than from HBO, and the lineup is hit or miss. But it still presents some quality standup comedy without the hassle of downtown parking and high ticket prices. More >>
