  • Bluebird Theater

    Bluebird Theater

    3317 E. Colfax Ave. Denver, CO 80218
    303-377-1666

http://www.bluebirdtheater.net The Bluebird Theater started hosting live music in 1994, and it didn't take long for the theater, built in 1913, to become one of the city's best midsized venues. With sculpted capitals, restored Victorian-style paintings and a vaulted ceiling, the place is as much a work of art as any of the touring and local bands that grace its stage. The marquee regularly lights up Colfax with some of the most important names in independent music, as well as lauded locals ready to make the leap from clubs to a bigger stage. In 2006, AEG Live took over the room and made significant upgrades to the production aspects of the place. More >>

    Boulder Theater

    2032 14th St. Boulder, CO 80302
    303-786-7030

http://www.bouldertheater.com The Boulder Theater is not the kind of place you go to get loaded on cheap beer and talk through a performance. Audiences in the palatial, art-deco-style hall come to actually listen to music, and for good reason: The historic theater's schedule is so well-rounded, there really is something for everyone. An eclectic mix of funk, jazz, hip-hop and rock performances and dynamic high-concept shows from local and national artists help fill the Boulder nights. This lovely, historic space offers as much for your eyes as it does for your ears. More >>

  • Brewski

    Brewski's Pub & Grill

    2100 E. 104th Ave. Denver, CO 80233
    720-929-1400

http://www.brewskispubandgrill.com In addition to running a string of bars and clubs since the 1960s, Chuck Persichetti owned Brewski's, at Highway 36 and Pecos, for a decade. Nearly ten years after selling the place (which is now Buckin' Harley's), he resurrected the Brewski's name and opened an updated version of his old spot in Thornton, at the former home of Los Pinos Mexican Restaurant. While the current incarnation is a bit smaller than the old one, Persichetti likes it that way, as he wanted the space to feel more cozy and intimate. Brewski's usually hosts live bands Thursday through Saturday nights, and the menu is made up of standard bar fare, including a variety of appetizers and sandwiches, pizza and burgers. More >>

  • Cactus Jack

    Cactus Jack's Saloon

    4651 Highway 73 Evergreen, CO 80439
    303-674-1564

http://www.cactusjacksaloon.com This saloon is a popular spot for music, imbibing and patio-sitting - and while you're soaking up the sun or knocking one back, you're bound to get hungry. Fortunately, Cactus Jack's has a solid menu of bar food, with a Mexican plate or two for good measure. Taking center stage are the two-dozen-plus Widespread Burgers, each named after a different Widespread Panic song and featuring toppings that range from fried eggs to Hatch green chiles to regular ol' bacon and cheese slices. You can order the Widespread Burgers with half-pound patties of all-natural, seasoned Anderson beef, marinated all-natural chicken breast or even Boca burgers. And that's not the end of the feel-good food: The establishment uses wind power and green products wherever possible, and it's been recycling bottles, cans and paper since back when "green" only referred to a color. • Casselman

    Casselman's Bar & Venue

2620 Walnut St. Denver, CO 80205
    720-242-8923

http://www.casselmans.com The last word of Casselman's Bar & Venue really tells you what you need to know: This is a venue, above all, and a huge one, located on a warehouse-y stretch of Walnut Street in the Ballpark neighborhood. The space can feel absolutely cavernous on an off night. Still, the long bar up front is always welcoming, flanked on one side by couches and pillows, under drawings of Mos Def, Jay-Z and other artists. If there's no live music to move you, you can swing on a giant tire swing or play beer pong. And you don't need to drink all that beer without some sustenance to sop it up: Casselman's has a small but serviceable menu, full of burgers, appetizers and a few Mex specials. And at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, they serve up beef tacos for free as long as the supply holds out. More >>

  • Celtic Tavern

    Celtic Tavern

1801 Blake St. Denver, CO 80202
    303-308-1795

http://www.celtictavern.com If you're looking for something Irish in LoDo and prefer to avoid the sports-bar crowd, Celtic Tavern might be just the ticket. Eschewing a green-beer motif in favor of decor that incorporates literary works from the Emerald Isle's finest, Celtic Tavern presents a distinct Gaelic theme. With its mahogany-paneled walls and fireplaces, the venue offers a cozy, Welsh-inspired nook and a leather-sofa-filled Scottish room for other bastards of the British Empire. The Celtic, which has fifty imported and domestic brews on tap, as well as boasting the one of the largest whiskey selections in Colorado, also brings live music on the weekends. Go for the drinks. Go for the style. Go for the decor or the camaraderie of fellow drinkers or to get really weird down in those tables where they can't see you from the bar. The last thing to go for is the food. • Central City Opera House

    Central City Opera House

124 Eureka St. Central City, CO 80427
    303-292-6500

http://www.centralcityopera.org The historic Central City Opera House is fascinating in and of itself: Built in 1878 by miners, it boasts gorgeous fresco on its ceiling, and there are names of notable Coloradans of yore -- such as Horace Tabor and Buffalo Bill -- carved on the backs of the seats. (Those carvings were transferred when the seating was updated in 1999.) But the venue's real beauty lies in its programming, which is showcased with the opera house's beautiful acoustics. Every summer, Central City Opera presents three productions for opera lovers in the metro area, a mix of one classic, one lesser-known and one American opera -- proof that this small town knows how to put on a big show. • Cervantes

    Cervantes' Masterpiece Ballroom

2637 Welton St. Denver, CO 80205
    303-297-1772

http://www.cervantesmasterpiece.com As the Casino Cabaret, this venue was one of Five Points' legendary jazz clubs, dating back to the '30s, when it brought in such legends as Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Benny Goodman; over the years, folks like B.B. King, Ray Charles and Ike and Tina Turner played there, too. And when the trio behind Quixote's took over the space in 2003, they geared the music more toward Deadheads and jam bands. But when new owners took over again in 2010, they renovated the main floor, added a larger stage, relocated the soundboard and made other improvements. Musically, the focus has shifted more toward dubstep, electronica, hip-hop acts and DJs, along with bluegrass and jam-centric bands. More >>
