Toronto singer Ladan Hussein, who performs under the name Cold Specks, belts out brooding lyrics over ethereal keys, creating a standalone sound that could be embraced by pop, folk, soul and goth aficionados alike. Armed with poetic lyrics (the name Cold Specks itself is borrowed from James Joyce’s Ulysses) and a gut-wrenching voice, Hussein’s eclectic repertoire is unified by her commanding personality and unflinching introspection. Her sound is, in part, inspired by her study of Mogadishu musical styles, which she’s woven into a moody electro-folk style. The daughter of Somali refugees, Hussein is touring North America in support of her most recent album, Fool’s Paradise, an exploration of longing for her homeland and her experience living in a culture that is increasingly hostile toward Muslims and refugees.
