Read the comments on Covet’s Bandcamp profile and you’ll notice a rather unified response from fans — namely, that Yvette Young is really damn good at guitar. They’re not wrong. As frontwoman for the San Jose-based trio, Young doesn’t sing, allowing instead for her creative, energized playing to serve as the musical focal point. The trio makes some amalgamation of math rock and indie and proggy post-rock that’s indebted to genre giants such as Explosions in the Sky. On most recent single “glimmer,” Covet swims inside a Mogwai-esque melancholia as David Adamiak’s unhurried bass line dutifully follows Young’s spirited finger-tapping. Math rock may not be a genre where stars are made, but Young and Covet are undeniable forces within it.
