Chicago is so two decades ago, and the hardcore scene where Fall Out Boy began is microscopic in the rearview. But while the band long ago graduated from anthemic pop punk to stadium-rock bombast, there remain reasons to hear Fall Out Boy perform live. In concert — even in an arena armed with T-shirt cannons — the frantic over-production that has characterized the quartet’s recent radio hits is lightened by the same dudes playing actual instruments. It’s then that fans old and new (check the FOB joint on the Big Hero 6 soundtrack) can hear what initially set FOB apart: Pete Wentz’s obsessive-compulsive, pop-culture-spinning, wordplay-cramming lyrics, and Patrick Stump’s searing, three-octave soul voice beaming a laser through the emotional rubble. (Also, FOB is inexplicably on tour with Jaden Smith and blackbear, so that’s something to see.)
