Just because darkness fills your soul doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the hell out of some roller coasters. Don’t believe it? Look no further than the May 21 Gothic Takeover at Lakeside, where hundreds of goths will descend in a black-clad mass to make merry, eat cotton candy and Tilt-a-Whirl until their hair looks like Robert Smith’s – assuming it didn’t already, of course. And don't worry if your gothisms are a little out of date: All are welcome.
“It's appealing to a wide range of people who are into all kinds of dark subcultures, [even if] they aren't big club-goers,” says Julian Black, who is co-hosting the event with Candace Midnight. “It's definitely a subculture that branches out to people of all ages.” Black emphasizes that the Takeover is an opportunity to celebrate the unique appeal of the still-vibrant subculture, make some new friends, maybe win a stuffed animal or two along the way. “People are obviously going to be coming up and complimenting people and meeting all kinds of other people and getting inspiration,” he says.
The goth gathering starts at 1 p.m. and goes until 10 p.m. (or later) at Lakeside Amusement Park, 4601 Sheridan Boulevard. Just $3 gets you in the gate, or drop $25 and ride everything all day. For more information, visit tiny.cc/lakesidegoth.
