Lizzo gives audiences the full-body treatment as a singer, rapper and electric personality. Starting as a Houston-based rapper, Lizzo moved to Minneapolis in 2011, where she found collaborators in producer BJ Burton and even Prince. She gained acclaim as an alternative hip-hop artist and kept drawing cross-genre fans like those in Sleater-Kinney, who tapped her to open their reunion tour. But it wasn’t until 2016 that Lizzo bounced into the mainstream with infectious empowerment anthem “Good as Hell,” popping off the Barbershop: The Next Cut soundtrack. The artist, born Melissa Jefferson, has leveraged that success into a hosting gig on MTV and a major-label EP, Coconut Oil. The latter is an unapologetic ode to body positivity, but Lizzo doesn’t offer platitudes; instead, she digs into the lived experience of women and underrepresented demographics.
