When Yuzo Nieto and his Pink Hawks play, people dance. Even when the band was a highbrow, avant-garde duo, it was hard to resist moving to its free-form, sprawling songs. Pink Hawks has evolved over its ten years, into a multi-instrumental Afrobeat outfit — and now, also, a Chicano hip-hop orchestra. All along, Nieto and the musicians he has brought on have respectfully borrowed from jazz, funk, soul, cumbia and conga, honoring the various cultures informing the songs.
