They might call themselves Ragged Union, but there’s nothing ragged about the bluegrass produced by this Boulder, Colorado-based sextet of accomplished players — two of whom, flatpicking guitarist/vocalist Geoff Union and vocalist Christina Union, are also united as husband and wife (and chief songwriters). They’re joined by champion mandolinist/vocalist Jordan Ramsey, award-winning banjo player Chris Elliott, fiddler extraordinaire Justin Hoffenberg, and bluegrass expert, Dave Richey, on upright bass. Together, they mix traditional and contemporary bluegrass, both respecting and challenging convention with adventurous lyrics, rhythmic flights and unique arrangements.
Ragged Union will be performing songs from their upcoming sophomore release, Time Captain, as well as numbers from their 2015 debut, Hard Row to Hoe, and select standards and covers.
Like many bands these days, there’s something borrowed and something new about Ragged Union’s sound. There are recognizable bluegrass melodies and country lyric themes alongside non-traditional lyric, rhythmic and arrangement ideas; Breakneck grassy duet numbers, and slower ‘country-funk’ tunes; traditional arrangements alongside composed ideas and the occasional ‘jam’ section.
