Sam Amidon is not a folk revivalist; he’s a folk re-creationist. Raised by roots-musician parents in Vermont, Amidon debuted in 2001 with But This Chicken Proved Falsehearted. On subsequent records, the multi-instrumentalist made collages out of American murder ballads, turned up the orchestral drama on folk standards, and even covered Mariah Carey. His new album, The Following Mountain, marks the first time that Amidon has focused on original compositions, which he approaches with more jazz sense than ever. With each release, Amidon proves that gumption and play are more fruitful than reverence when reimagining the American songbook.
