You can accuse Daddy Issues of many things, but being soft-spoken isn’t one of them. The trio makes snappy and loud grunge pop plucked from the ’90s; it’s not difficult to imagine Julia Stiles’s character in 10 Things I Hate About You thrashing her hair to every song on this year’s Deep Dream. Even if you think ’90s nostalgia is already played out or happening way too soon (or both), you can hardly hate on the band’s relentless energy or ability to go hard with the guitar without losing the subtle tenderness of its melodies. Best of all, however, is its clear-eyed take on the confusion of being a young adult. Whether longing for a lost summer love (and his Cadillac with the Deadhead bumpersticker) or crashing and burning through contemporary sexual politics — “I feel promiscuous, but maybe I’m a prude,” sings frontwoman Jenna Moynihan on “I’m Not” — Daddy Issues thrives when mashing the music of decades past with the conflicts of the present. The results are cathartic for multiple generations.
