Peter Jones’ new biography about jazz vocalist Mark Murphy, “This is Hip,” spans the singer’s prolific singing styles and scat licks through interviews with friends, colleagues, and students. Mark Murphy died in October of 2015, and this book is a loving tribute to his rich jazz accomplishments. He made more than 40 albums, added lyrics to instrumentals, and established himself as an unrivaled interpreter of ballads.
LaCour Art Bar in Denver will hold a book release at their Sunday brunch, March 18, 10am - 2pm, with comments about Mark and the book by Tom Cunniffe, jazz history writer and blogger, and Syd Harriett, local jazz vocalist.
Pianist Ellyn Rucker joins jazz violinist Jane Uitti, proving brunch music featuring many of the songs that Mark sang and recorded, including Stolen Moments, Detour Ahead, You Don’t Know What Love Is, and other standards that were interpreted by Mark. Vocalist Janine Gastineau will join them on several tunes. [Organizer's description]
