I’m a big fan of the little guy, and I have to say that the oft-overlooked East End Arts District in downtown Aurora does wear the cloak of a little guy. But it wears it well: The brave network of galleries, studios and theaters clustered along the Colfax corridor, from Clinton to Geneva streets, includes the likes of Downtown Aurora Visual Arts, a gallery providing arts mentoring programs for kids; the functional-art-oriented East End Applied Arts; the Shadow and Aurora Fox theaters; The Other Side Arts, which provides studio and exhibit space for local artists; and the Red Delicious printmaking studio, to name a few.

The downtown Aurora community takes a little time out to crow a couple times each year; tonight’s hurrah, the East End Winter Art Walk, marks the onset of the holiday season with exhibit openings and open houses up and down the tight-knit avenue from 5 to 9 p.m. Download a map beforehand at the East End website, or begin your East End trek at the MLK Library/Municipal Services Center, 9898 East Colfax Avenue, where tour maps will be handed out; from there, hop on a free pedicab to enjoy artist receptions, holiday-inspired exhibits and refreshments at participating venues, as well as public artworks and artist-designed benches located throughout the district.
