Heinrich’s ManeuversMichael Paglia
Christoph Heinrich, the curator of modern and contemporary art at the Denver Art Museum, has been on a remarkable roll since coming here from Hamburg a couple of years ago. For starters, he reconceived the permanent collection and mounted a major solo dedicated to Daniel Richter. Then, a couple of weeks ago, it was announced that hes to become the DAMs executive director, taking over the reins from Lewis Sharp. But before that happens, Heinrich is unveiling his years-in-the-making, state-of-the-art, over-the-top installation show, Embrace!, that meanders throughout the four levels of the Frederic C. Hamilton Building. Referring to the highly visible repairs to the Hamilton that have gone on for most of the last year, Heinrich says, For us, Embrace! is like a second opening after the first one three years ago, and we can forget about the roof and the scaffolding and all of that. Heinrich considered forty artists before whittling his list down to seventeen, all but one of whom created site-specific work for this show. Theres an international cast of participants, but there is also a trio of Denver artists and bravo to Heinrich for that: Rick Dula, John McEnroe and Timothy Weaver, working together with his students from the University of Denver. Embrace! opens today at 10 a.m. and will be on display through April 4 at the museum, 100 West 14th Avenue Parkway. For information, call 720-865-5000 or go to www.denverartmuseum.org.
