Flick Pick

In case you missed Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind earlier this year -- or can't remember if you saw it or not -- the University of Colorado International Film Series stands ready to fix you up. One of the quirkiest romantic comedies of recent years, it features rubber-faced Jim Carrey as Joel Barish, a Manhattan wage slave who is mysteriously drawn to a blue-haired free spirit named Clementine (Kate Winslet), and she to him, in a connection that neither of them can quite explain. Suffice it to say that the screenplay was written by Charlie Kaufman, the same purveyor of hyperactive mind games who put us through intellectual hoops with Being John Malkovich and Adaptation. As it happens, Joel and Clementine have both undergone a bizarre surgical procedure by which all the memories of their defunct two-year relationship have been erased. Leave it to Kaufman (and director Michael Gondry) to parlay this techno-twist into a complex meditation on love, the nature of self and the progress of souls, spiced with laughter and a certain surreal sweetness. That's Tom Wilkinson as the crazed doctor who runs a clinic called, appropriately enough, Lacuna.

Eternal Sunshine... will screen at 7 and 9:15 p.m. Monday, October 4, in Muenzinger Auditorium on CU's Boulder campus. For information, log on to www.internationalfilmseries.com
