Located on a stretch of South Broadway not known for its restaurants, Acres is a humble yet high-achieving neighborhood spot, with servers providing a friendly welcome and good hospitality. The menu skews country, with buttery biscuits, housemade tater tots, and such hearty entrees as pork chops with au gratin potatoes and trout with risotto. The kitchen strikes the right balance between creative and homey, serving appetizers in yellow colanders while also making everything from the mustard in the mustard gravy to crème fraîche in-house. “If you like my little joint,” says owner John Benson, who also lives in the neighborhood, “let’s hang out.” Given how good you’ll feel when you walk away, that’s an invitation you’ll want to accept.
