Gardiner Hammond has always been a fan of Capitol Hill -- the bars, the music venues, the mix of people and styles. So when he began searching for a location for his brewery, Alpine Dog Brewing, he focused on the eclectic neighborhood. "It's the densest part of Denver," he notes, "and there weren't a lot of breweries here." But finding a space that was the right size, and for the right price, was difficult. At least until last September, 2013, when Angelo's CDs moved into the large space next to the Ogden Theatre that was formerly run by Independent Records. Angelo's only wanted half of the building, so Hammond took the other 4,200 square feet. Just over a year later, Alpine Dog -- a term that refers to Hammond's love of the outdoors -- opened with a fifteen-barrel brewhouse, a 35-foot-long bar, room for nearly 100 people, and four beers on tap: a rye blonde, an amber, an IPA and a Belgian pale ale with American hops.
