Owner Chris Sargent set out to create a neighborhood restaurant for northwest Denver, but Brazen Neighborhood Eatery quickly turned into a destination for the entire city. Whether you sit by the fire pit on the park-side patio or inside the loud and lively dining room, you'll appreciate Brazen's unpretentious, seasonally inspired small plates at prices so reasonable, you can eat and drink, and eat and drink, without the fear of a formidable tab. Start with drinks, deviled eggs and fancy toast, slathered with everything from pork belly and arugula to chèvre and butternut squash. Move on to heartier dishes, perhaps oysters on the half shell, braised meatballs or roast chicken, one of several large plates sized for two, with moist meat hidden under golden skin crisscrossed by large sprigs of rosemary and thyme. For a menu that feels familiar with its preponderance of small plates, Brazen's emphasis on vegetables stands out, and while the selection changes with the seasons, you might find carrot-butternut squash soup with a dollop of spiced yogurt and golden-raisin purée; delicata squash overflowing with grains, pomegranate seeds, apple and herbs; or a peppery arugula salad with blue cheese, pickled cranberries, and a pear poached in apple brandy and champagne vinegar. If you can, come early to nab one of the six seats at the chef's counter, where you'll find yourself treated like a VIP, with dishes delivered by the cooks themselves, tastes handed out like secrets, and an amuse-bouche, something the kitchen otherwise reserves for industry folks or friends.
