A year after El Chingon left its tiny home in an Arvada strip mall, Lorenzo Nunez Jr. finally opened his new place in an old house on Tennyson Street in December 2013. Even before they unlocked the doors, "there were people waiting for us in the freezing cold,” reports David Lopez, who shares exec-chef duties with his grandmother, Gloria Nunez, a native of Mexico City. Many of those people were loyal customers from the Arvada location who loved the tacos, tostadas, burritos, sauces, salsas and, especially, chiles rellenos that had made El Chingon one of our favorite Mexican restaurants in the area. And now there’s even more to love, since this El Chingon has plenty of seating, as well as a hefty selection of tequilas and an inventive cocktail list. The food has gone more upscale, though, to reflect the family's desire "to keep it a bistro, a little more high-end," says Lopez. But have no fear: The rellenos are as good as ever, provided you like the soft, not crispy, variety.
