When Frank Bonanno added Lou's Food Bar to his empire in 2010, fans rushed in for housemade sausage, charcuterie and what the restaurateur was calling roadhouse fare informed by a seasonal French influence. The charcuterie program is long gone, but Lou's has done an admirable job adapting to the tastes of the locals in Sunnyside. A big neon arrow draws you off 38th Avenue to Lou's, where you'll find a few-frills interior that's been designed with care to pass off the illusion that it doesn't care. Lou's features a late-night happy hour and an educated craft-beer list; it originally opened with a French bent to its heartland-highway cuisine, and it's still here, but minimized in favor of meatloaf, burgers and fried chicken two ways: buttermilk-soaked or Nashville hot. This is a place where you can while away the hours in good company.
