One of the first new eateries to hang its shingle in 2014, the Post moved into a former VFW post in Lafayette and got off to a quick start thanks to guidance from Big Red F, the restaurant group behind Lola and the growing stable of Jax Fish Houses. Drawing families and beer lovers alike from both the town and farther afield, the dishes prepared by chef-partner Brett Smith and his crew are far from ordinary renditions of Southern standbys. Fried chicken is first brined, then battered in seasoned, gluten-free flour and tossed in the pressure fryer for a serious crunch; rotisserie chicken tempts with herbs rubbed into the skin. Sides are too good to be pushed aside, especially pork-laden collard greens, creamy grits and green-chile mac and cheese. Beers, like the award-winning Howdy Beer crafted by former Dogfish Head whiz Bryan Selders, add to the fun, as do such desserts as whoopie pie and daily blue-plate specials, including Monday's burger with caramelized onions on an English muffin. But that chicken really flies any day of the week.
