Smack in the middle of the busiest stretch of Highland, Common Grounds is always bustling, the mismatched tables and chairs throughout the eclectically decorated rooms full of grad students, professionals, neighborhood residents and other visitors. The space is especially cozy in winter; in the summer, there's also sidewalk seating. Originally intended as an alternative to the bar scene, the coffeehouse has since acquired a liquor license that allows it to pour beer and wine. But there's still a big lineup of coffee and espresso drinks made from beans that come from Common Grounds' own roastery, Highland Coffee & Tea. And there are plenty of food choices, including soups, salads, pastries and sandwiches.
